Discover New Zealand
From the sub-tropical far north to the frequently cold far south, New Zealand is a land of contrasts, brought to the world stage recently as the backdrop for ‘The Lord of the Rings’ film trilogy. There are people who look wistfully at this country as one of the last remaining paradises on earth, because it has not suffered (to the extent of many) from man’s rapacious greed.
Nature was generous to New Zealand, as if compensating for the empty space in the southern Pacific. It created imposing snow-capped mountains, forests, rivers and lakes; endless stretches of coastline dissected by magnificent harbors and beaches. The smog that lingers over much of the world is absent here and so too is the pressure of population.
New Zealand is geologically young - left behind by the main evolutionary thrust.
When it finally joined the world, it was too isolated for even the boldest land mammals or marsupials, except for one tiny bat, to reach this island nation. During its period of isolation, New Zealand developed a unique flora and fauna and it is for this reason that many journey here to study the natural environment.
Thus a dramatic landscape awaited the arrival of the greatest predator of all – man. It is fitting that the first to arrive were the bold and skilled Polynesians who had ventured into the open sea thousands of years earlier. The Maori successfully colonized this great prize, developing a rich and distinctive culture that flourishes today.
In the 18th century the English navigator, James Cook, was to re-discover the country after a Dutchman had first happened upon the islands more than a century before. Within 20 years of Cook’s visit, whaling stations and sealing gangs had arrived. New Zealand’s European constitutional history began in 1840 when it became a British colony. Today the country of 4+ million people is a modern parliamentary democracy with a small but efficient economy.
This relatively new land possessing beautiful scenery, recreational diversity and the cultural identity of a modern form of Pacifica welcomes all travelers. The over-riding impression that many take away with them is the friendliness of the people. New Zealanders themselves are much traveled and welcome the opportunity to show visitors their land and often forge lasting friendships in the process.
