Discover Infinite Possibilities

Discover Jordan

Jordan is located on the edge of Asia, Africa and Europe. Because of this centralized location, Jordan has been home to some of mankind's earliest settlements and villages.  Many of the world's great civilizations can still be seen today. The modern and beautiful capital, Amman, is a large city with a population almost equal to half the country's population.

As the crossroads of the Middle East, the lands of Jordan and Palestine have served as a strategic nexus connecting Asia, Africa and Europe. Thus, since the dawn of civilization, Jordan's geography has given it an important role to play as a conduit for trade and communications, connecting East and West, North and South. Jordan continues to play this role today.

An estimated 1.2 million people visited Jordan in the millennium year, attracted by the country's stunning landscape, fascinating cultural heritage, and world-class historic sites. Wider international interest will continue to promote Jordanian tourism since it’s a young country with a history that dates back to Biblical times.  Jordan is a bridge between civilizations, between the desert and the sea, between the east and the west.  Built upon layers of history, Jordan is a country of beauty and contradictions.  Desert canyons, hills, valleys, castles, the geological phenomena that is Wadi Rum, the Nabatean capital of Petra, to the Red Sea.

Accommodation is in a 122-room modern hotel located within walking distance from the University of Jordan.  The active, vivid, yet safe university area hosts all types of restaurants, shops, and a relatively large shopping mall, which have been serving a large student population of no less the 40,000 students.

Participants are offered a single occupancy room (1 person per room), fully air-conditioned and equipped with direct dial-telephone and computer port, color television with more than 20 Satellite channels, and an in-room mini refrigerator.  Breakfast and dinner are offered as open buffets at the hotel and are included in the accommodation fee. Although Lunch is not included, it may be taken at one of the many cafeterias conveniently located nearby the hotel.

Participants may extend their stay in the provided accommodation beyond the end of the program at an additional charge of $250 USD per week.

Visa ~ Legal Travel Document Information:

All passports must be valid for at least six months following arrival to Jordan.  Multiple-Entry Visas are obtained from Jordanian consulates around the world, and are valid for 3-4 months from the date of issue.

Participants staying for four (4) weeks or less may obtain a one (1) month Tourist Residence Visa upon arrival at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA). Although this Visa is only valid for one (1) month, it may be easily extended for two (2) additional months, should the need arise. After that date you must exit and re-enter the country, or undergo immigration procedures.  If your visa has not been renewed properly by the time you leave Jordan you will have to pay a fine at the border.

If you plan to stay for more than two weeks in Jordan, you will need to register at the nearest police station.

Airline/Airport:

Upon confirmation of a placement and receipt of program details, participants are encouraged to make their travel arrangements.  Once you receive your travel itinerary, please e-mail a copy to IIVN to ensure we are prepared for your arrival and have arranged for your airport pick up.

All international flights arrive at Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA), which is about 25 kilometers south of Amman. If you have not received a Visa from the Jordanian embassy or consulate  in your country, then you may easily get a 1-month visa from the airport.  This process will take several minutes. After you finish up with the immigration procedure, claim your luggage and proceed to the outer gate.

A staff member from our Receiving Organization will pick you up at the airport and drive you to your accommodation. Please wait at the outer gate of the customs' hall of the airport so that that you may easily see the designated staff member holding a sign written with your name on it.

*Note: As summer is the busiest season, flights tend to book very quickly, so should you be traveling during the summer months, please plan ahead appropriately.

Climate:

Jordan is part of the Eastern Mediterranean weather system and boasts one of the world's most pleasant climates. There are marked seasonal contrasts, however. Summers are dry and warm-to-hot and winters are wet and cool-to-cold, with occasional snow storms.

January is the coldest month and, although below-freezing temperatures are not unknown, the average winter temperature is above 7.2°C (45°F).  The hottest month is August, when temperatures may reach 48.9°C (120°F) in the Jordan Valley. In Amman, the average summer temperature is a pleasant 25.6°C (78°F).

In short, the climate in Jordan is very balanced and moderate which enables you to travel to Jordan all year long in comfort.

Currency Exchange/Bank Machines/ATM’s:

Participants may bring money with them in US dollars or Euros and exchange them to Jordan Dinar in Amman.

Visa and American Express cards are widely accepted.

Dress:

In the Summer, Jordan is very dry and warm. However, the low humidity makes the dryness comfortable and endurable. The temperatures range between 26-33 C◦, therefore we recommend that you bring with you the appropriate summer clothes.

In general, any casual clothing is appropriate for summer wear, however, our recommended clothes for women would be a long dress, pants or jeans, with a blouse or shirt that extends to the elbows.  Clothes that shows off the waist, cleavage, or the back is not appropriate.

For men, appropriate attire consists of pants or jeans, and a shirt extending to the elbows.  Winter, from October through February, can be cold, particularly in Amman, with snow, rain and wind. About 75% of the country can be described as having a desert climate with very little annual rainfall.

Language:

Participants will be introduced to basic Arabic language skills during their orientation.  We are also pleased to provide information regarding additional Arabic language classes, which may be taken prior to, during or after their program duration.  Please contact us in the event you are interested in this opportunity.

People & Religion Diversity:

The majority of Jordan's 5 million people are Arabs descended from the various tribes that have migrated to the area over the years from all directions. In addition, there are Circassians, Chechens, and a small Armenian population.

As for religion, more than 92% of Jordanians are Muslims, and about 6% are Christians. Jordan values its diverse population, and has consequently provided for the cultural rights of all its citizens. The tradition of tolerance and appreciation for diversity has long been a hallmark of Hashemite Jordan and it has helped to provide a stable social foundation on which to build the country.

People in Jordan are very nice, friendly, welcoming, and curious, and one makes friendship with them very quickly. Also, Jordanians have the traditional values of hospitality and generosity, and treat their foreign guests with great respect!
